Last Updated: Monday, November 8th, 2004 HOME | Previous Page Why I failed in Libya - Chukwu Ejiro Femi-Babafemi Reporter, Lagos   Two weeks after the LG Cup ended in Tripoli Libya, Super Eagles chief coach, Christian Chukwu, has explained that his inability to get players from the major clubs in the professional league was the reason why he failed to make any appreciable impact. Chukwu prosecuted the four-nation tournament with players from current league champions Dolphin Football Club of Port-Harcourt and placed last in the championship that was won by the host country. He told Daily Independent that Enyimba of Aba and Rangers International of Enugu, who at the time were engaged in continental championships, made him alter his programme, as he could not invite the players he had in mind. “That was why there was no camping as I believed that the players from Dolphin who made up a large number of the team understood themselves perfectly well to blend easily with the other players,” Chukwu said. Chukwu, who acknowledged the risky decision in using players from a particular club, frowned at criticisms that greeted the team’s poor performance, alleging that the prevailing structures affected the team. “What happened in Tripoli was a good experience for the players but for anyone to say that I should be blamed for the poor performance should get his facts properly as to when the team regrouped to prepare for the tournament.
