The fate of the three cities, Berlin
(Germany), Split (Croatia) and Valencia (Spain), bidding to host the 2009
edition of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World
Championships would be determined at the next IAAF Council meeting in Helsinki
on 4-5 December 2004. In a press release by the IAAF at the weekend, it
stated that the final decision would follow presentations made by the
representatives of the three contending cities.
“The venue of the 2009 edition of the
IAAF World Championships in Athletics, the Jewel in the Crown of IAAF World
Athletics Series events, will be decided at the next IAAF Council meeting in
Helsinki, on December 4-5,” the release noted, even as it added that the
council would review reports from its various commissions. “Council will
also review reports from the Athletes’ Commission, Coaches’
Commission, Competition Commission, Development Commission, Juridical
Commission and the Medical and Anti-Doping Commission, as well as the usual activity
reports of the IAAF President and General Secretary.”
The Council meeting, it stated, would hold
at the Hotel Scandic Continental, and advising that a limited number of rooms
would be available for representatives of the international media, strictly on
a first come, first served basis.
The IAAF, the statement added, had
negotiated the room rate that is 136 Euros/night (single) or 170 Euros/night
(double) with breakfast and taxes included.
