KANO state commissioner for education, Hajiya
Balaraba Bello Maitama has querried a department in the ministry for late
reporting of a fire incident at the Aminu Kano Community Commercial College,
Goron Dutse.
The commissioner who was accompanied by her
permanent secretary and some directors of the ministry who paid an
unscheduled visit to the school was shocked to learn that the incident
happened over a week ago without her knowledge.
Hajiya Balaraba who visibly showed her anger
over the situation, warned that henceforth, such emergencies must be
reported promptly for necessary attention.
According to a press release signed by Alhaji
Abdu Usman, chief public relations officer of the ministry, the commissioner
sympathized with the school authority, staff and students as well as the
victims and assured that government would soon provide relief items to
alleviate their sufferings.
She further directed the physical planning
personnel of the ministry to visit the school and assess the extent of
damage of the affected areas for appropriate action.
While conducting the commissioner round, the
principal of the school, Malam Bashir Mahammad Fagge said the incident
occurred eight days ago at about 2.30 p.m and it was communicated to the
department of schools management at the ministry's headquarters.
He explained that as a result of the fire, part
of NYSC lodge building was completely razed down, while properties including
personal belongings of the corpers were destroyed.
The principal added that, though the immediate
causes of the incident could not be ascertained, however preliminary reports
indicated that the fire may have emanated from a nearby bush fire.
In the meantime, efforts are being made to
resettle victims at a nearby staff quarters, while the state director of
NYSC along with other officials of the directorate had paid a sympathy visit
to the school.
The state commissioner for information, Alhaji
Garba Abubakar who is also the state chairman NYSC governing council had
earlier paid a similar visit to the college.
