Eschew violence General Alli urges people

From CHRISTIANA GOKYO, Jos

PLATEAU state administrator, General Chris Alli has appealed to the people of the state to abhor violence as a means of achieving political and economic objectives.

Making the appeal on Thursday while inaugurating the Christians Muslim Welfare Board and the Plateau Investment and Property Development Company, the administrator urged them to abhor rumour mongering which he described as the bane of social existence.

He said religionising Plateau state is a sheer smokescreen for the perpetration of ungodly vices.

Let us make religion a weapon of positive change rather than destabilization", saying that the reconstitution of the two boards has been carried out with the utmost intention of injecting new blood and flesh ideas into policy thrust of these organizations.

According to him, the sectarian nature of crisis on the Plateau was a serious indictment on the adherents of both religions, saying that it was a reflection of the radical departure from the fundamental norms of principles propagated by religions.

He said it was obnoxious and nave to profess the oneness of humanity in God, while nothing to annihilate each other through sectarian violence.

According to him, some of these aberrations are the manifestation of the flag ranted abuse of religion for the attainment of narrow minded objectives.

He said religion and politics are two separate things with different appeals, saying that the merger of the two is not possible except in a theocratic arrangement.

Gov Alli pointed out that it was unfortunate that Plateau has compounded its problems by the increased politisation of religion leading to loss of integrity reverence and trust for religious leaders.

According to him, politicians have a lot to gain from the politisation of religions, but religious leaders and their adherents would always be the worst for it, saying that it is time for religious leaders to concentrate on their spiritual obligations while praying for the politicians to play the game according to the rule.

Otherwise he said, religious leaders would be placed at risk while politicians continue to exploit the situation for their selfish motives.
