FCT police ban labour procession

From KABIRU YUSUF, Abuja

THE Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command has warned Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to suspend its earlier planned labour civil society peaceful procession scheduled for today for what it called security implication.

According to a release signed by the Police Public Relations Officer in the FCT, DSP Okwuonu Allwell, although the FCT command had received notification letter from the NLC, yet, the command had advised the organizers to suspend it following a report that the peaceful procession would be hijacked to cause mayhem.

The release explained that police investigation and intelligence reports indicated that there is a grand plan by hoodlums to hijack the procession and cause looting and destruction of people's properties, public institutions and lives of innocent citizens in the federal capital.

"In the light of the above situation, no permit is granted by the commissioner of police, FCT for the planned procession to take place in the Federal Capital Territory and its environs by NLC and civil society organisations,'' the release said.

Moreover, the release appealed to the organizers of the procession to rescind their decision in the interest of peace and tranquility, adding that no room would be given to miscreants and hoodlums to take over the streets of the federal capital territory in whatever guise.

Adequate security arrangements, the release further said, have been put in place to safeguard people on movements in and out of the federal capital territory through motor parks, airport, business areas and government offices.

The police warned that whoevers seen or hired to pose threat to the peace and peoples lives and property should stay clear of the streets as anyone caught will not be spared by the law, soliciting the understanding and cooperation of the general public.
