MONDAY , NOVEMBER 8, 2004   RAMADAN 26, 1425 A.H.           Immigration Service decentralises international passport issuance Nigerians travelling abroad can now heave a sigh of relief as the Immigration Service Department has decentralised the issuance of international passport. A senior Immigration official in the Ondo State command told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Akure that scarcity of passport booklets had become a thing of the past in the state. �Unlike in the past when we used to experience shortage of the booklet, we now have it in abundant, and an applicant can obtain his passport within 72 hours,�� he said. He also said that the processing of travel documents had been decentralised as each state command of the Immigration Service �is now equipped to process the passport with latest and sophisticated machines��. The source said there had been tremendous improvement in the service and activities of the department in Ondo State with the provision of new equipment and other logistics for the command. He recalled that the Immigration officials manned border areas, particularly the coastal areas to prevent foreigners from registering or voting during last year�s registration for the national identity card and general elections. �Our officers and men were drafted to Igbokoda and Igbekebo in Ilaje and Ese-Odo riverine local government areas of the state where aliens predominate to prevent them from participating in the exercise that are mainly for Nigerians,�� he said.
