MONDAY , NOVEMBER 8, 2004   RAMADAN 26, 1425 A.H.           Police warn owners of illegal firearms to surrender them The Anambra State Police Command has called on people in possession of illegal and unregistered firearms to surrender them. The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Felix Ogbaudu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka that with the approach of Christmas, there was the tendency for more robberies and other violent crimes to occur. �With the �ember� months here, some people want to engage in criminal activities to make money to celebrate the forthcoming festivities,�� he said. Ogbaudu said: �The state police command is therefore appealing to those who possess firearms illegally to surrender same to the police in their various localities.�� He warned that persons who failed to comply with the requested would be arrested and treated as armed robbery suspects. �It is therefore in the interest of all and sundry to comply,�� he said. Ogbaudu called on members of the public who knew persons with illegal firearms and failed to surrender them to report such persons to the police immediately. He gave assurance that the command would ensure maximum security in the state throughout the Christmas celebrations.
