Nwankwo Kanu gets new manager
WEST Bromwich Albion, which last week confirmed Nigeria's Nwankwo Kanu as its captain, has named Bryan Robson as their new manager. The new manager was also earlier linked to take over Nigeria's Super Eagles.
Robson, 47, has agreed a two-and-a-half year deal, with Nigel Pearson moving to The Hawthorns as his assistant.
The ex-England skipper, who began his playing career with the Baggies before joining Manchester United, is shortly to be officially unveiled.
He enjoyed a glittering career at Old Trafford, and won 90 caps for England, before moving into management with Middlesbrough and Bradford.
Robson's first match in charge will be on Sunday at home to Middlesbrough where he spent seven years as manager after ending his playing career.
As a manager he twice steered Middlesbrough to promotion to the Premiership " a feat also achieved by Megson with West Brom " and attracted big names such as Juninho and Fabrizio Ravanelli to Teesside."
Robson parted company with the club in 2001 after Terry Venables was brought in to work alongside him in a difficult final season.
He then had an unsuccessful spell with Bradford and a year ago was offered the position of head coach of Nigeria which he declined.
Viv Anderson, assistant to Robson at Middlesbrough, said he was surprised the ex-England skipper had not returned to top-level management sooner.
"He's learnt from his time at Bradford and Middlesbrough and I think he'll go on to be really successful at West Brom," he told BBC Radio Five Live.
"I think he's got all the attributes to go all the way."
