Falconets await Obasanjo's N50 million largesse
UNLESS urgent steps are taking, the country may witness another show of shame in the female football circle as members of the female U-19 team, the Falconets, currently in Thailand, are yet to get the N50 million approved by President Olusegun Obasanjo for the team's participation in the FIFA Junior World Cup.
The Guardian learnt yesterday that barely a few hours to the Falconets' first group game against China, leader of delegation and chairman of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA , Ibrahim Galadima, was still in Abuja looking for money.
An NFA source also said the body was still in a great dilemma on how to source for funds for the up-keep of the team in Thailand.
"It is easier for people to say that the president approved the sum of N50 million for the team to participate in the U-19 women championship in Thailand. But as I speak with you now, the NFA has not received a kobo and all efforts towards getting money from other sources seem not to be working well in our favour. It is a difficult situation for us," the source stated.
Investigation further revealed that both Galadima and secretary general, Taiwo Ogunjobi, were still making frantic efforts towards securing funds to enable Galadima travel to Thailand, possibly tomorrow to join the team.
Head of the Female Football Committee of the NFA, Alhaja Ayo Omidiran had told The Guardian on Friday shortly before departing with the team that Galadima was staying back to collect money meant for the team before joining them in Thailand.
"We don't want a repeat of what happened in South Africa, hence our chairman is staying back to get all that is entitled to the players and their officials before joining us in Thailand", Omidiran had stated on Friday at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
President Obasanjo had allegedly approved the sum of N50 million about three weeks ago for the Falconets' participation in the second FIFA U-19 women championship holding in Bangkok, Thailand.
The Falconets will be facing China their first group match later today.
