The Abuja Environmental Protection Board at the weekend,
commenced clearance of pedestrian walkways in Abuja metropolis to among
other things, protect the vegetation surrounding them.
Decree 10 of 1997 vests powers in the AEPB to enforce all
environmental legislation and
abate all forms of environmental degradation and
nuisance.
It also empowers the board to among other things, halt
any activity which in its opinion amounts to degradation of the environment
in addition to preserving, conserving and restoring the biological diversity
in the FCT.
AEPB director, Hadiza Abdullahi, who disclosed
the commencement of the clearance of the walkways to the
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the weekend, said the exercise which is
being carried out by a selected group of AEPB's dedicated staff, would be a
regular one.
She said the aim of the exercise tagged `` operation
clear walkways'', is to free the walkways to enable pedestrians avoid using
the highways, in addition to protecting the vegetation near them.
According to her, the exercise also became necessary to
get rid of hawkers who had hitherto taken over the pedestrian walkways, as
well as outdoor advertisers, who had resorted to doing their business along
the such walkways.
``The exercise is also aimed at preventing outdoor
advertising practitioners from using such walkways to mount notice boards
and sundry advertising materials, in addition to assisting in litter control
within the metropolis.
``You may have noticed how the walkways are littered with
things like used polythene bags, which is an eyesore to people. Such bags
and other disused items thrown along the walkways are causing problems
especially to the contractors assigned to clean the roadsides,'' Abdullahi
said.
She warned that anybody caught contravening the ban on
hawking along such pedestrian walkways would be prosecuted.
