Ag. gov urges Christians to emulate Muslims burial rites

Worried by expensive burial cultures, the Bayelsa government has urged Christians to emulate the simple burial rites of theMuslims.

The Bayelsa Acting Governor, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, made the call in Yenagoa at the weekend when executive members of the state chapter of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs visited him. Jonathan urged Christians to stop performing elaborate and expensive burial rites, saying it was burdensome.

The deputy governor noted that Muslims had a unique way of burying their dead and said the state government would look into the matter of giving them a section of the Azikoro cemetery when completed to bury their dead.

He charged Christians and Muslims to cultivate the spirit of peaceful co-existence for accelerated growth and development of the state.

Jonathan stressed the need for Muslims and Christians in the state to form a parallel body on conflict resolution,``as all religions originated from God''.

He assured the Muslim community of a fair quota on the Pilgrims Welfare Board and promised that they would not be short-changed in any way by the state government.

Earlier, the leader of the delegation and state President of the council, Alhaji Ibrahim Arumuna, had thanked the state government for the assistance it had rendered so far to the Muslim community.

He used the opportunity to ask for government assistance in building their own mosque in the state.

Arumuna pledged the Muslims' commitment to peaceful co-existence in the state.
