DAILY TRIUMPH-Bayelsa asks FG to make waterways navigable

Bayelsa asks FG to make waterways navigable

The federal government has been urged to make the coastal waterways navigable by clearing them of weeds, logs and other obstructions.

The Bayelsa Acting Governor, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, made the call when he received

the House of Representatives' Committee on Works, led by its Chairman, Deacon

Christopher Enai, in Yenagoa at the weekend.

Jonathan said just as the committee, with oversight functions over the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, was concerned about highway maintenance, it should equally ensure that attention was paid to the waterways.

He said: ``For a state like Bayelsa, whose land area is more than 75 per cent covered with water, it is important to clear the waterways of logs, weeds and other impediments to facilitate easy passage.''

The acting governor commended the National Assembly's decision to tour the states to monitor budget implementation, but called on the federal government to evolve a machinery for clearing the waterways regularly.

Jonathan also appealed to the federal government to increase the kilometres of its roads in the state.

He pointed out that besides the East-West road that passed through the state, Bayelsa had only 28 km of federal roads.

Jonathan lamented that many years after government's approval of the

construction of the Yenagoa-Nembe-Brass road and the Sagbama-Ekeremor-Aggey road, work had yet to start.

Earlier, the Chairman of the committee had said the members were in the state to evaluate the budget's performance by monitoring how funds appropriated were utilised.

Enai lauded the state government for transforming Bayelsa and said the nationwide tour would equip the committee with first-hand information that would form the National Assembly's input into the 2005 federal budget.
