KANO state ministry of education has directed
that from January next year, all female Muslim students in both government
and private schools in the state must cover themselves with Hijab mode of
dress.
The state commissioner for education, Hajiya
Balaraba Bello Maitama announced this during a meeting with proprietors and
proprietresses of private and voluntary agency schools in the state.
She said the decision was taken in good faith
to entrench moral discipline which conforms with the culture and social
setting of our society.
The commissioner affirmed that the state
government is focused on the provision of qualitative education at all
levels and called for the cooperation and support of the general public
towards acheiving the set goals.
Turning to privte school proprietors, Hajiya
Balaraba warned that government would not hesitate to deal with any school
found violating laid down rules and regulations governing the operation of
their schools.
She noted with concern, the proliferation of
illegal private schools in every corner of the state without giving regard
to suitability of the areas and their physical structures.
The commissioner said as part of the measure,
by the end of November, a list of all approved private schools would be
published in the media for the attention of parents and public.
Earlier, the director in-charge of private
institutions in the state ministry of education, Malam Tajudeen Gambo had
said that the meeting was organised to discuss and exchange ideas aimed at
enhancing education in the state.
The director advised the proprietors to
approach the ministry directly on any issue pertaining to the operations of
their schools to avoid being misled.
In their separate responses, some participants
commended the state goverment for showing greater interest in the successful
running of private schools in the state.
