GOVERNOR Ibrahim Shekarau of Kano state has
criticized some world leaders over the way they paint Islam black by linking
it with terrorism.
The governor who was speaking when he received
the Counsellor for the French Embassy in Nigeria, Mr. Kostia Sakow on a
courtesy visit, said Islam is a religion of peace and tolerance.
Malam Shekarau hinted that like any other
religion, Islam has its bad eggs who see fundamentalism as the way out of
the political bondage meted on them.
He explained that should Islam and Muslims
receive equal treatment, the good roots of Islam would be traced with a view
to separating terrorism and the true teaching of Islam thereby making the
world a peaceful place to live.
Governor Shekarau pointed out that Islam is a
total message to all mankind and preaches believers in oneness of God,
saying it is mischievous to link Islam with terrorism.
He revealed that politics is all about good
governance which means applying people's aspirations into practice, adding,
that was why his government resolved to implement Sharia legal system as
demanded by the people of the state.
Earlier, the Counsellor of the French Embassy
in Nigeria, Mr. Kostia Sakon had disclosed that they were in Kano to have an
in-depth knowledge of the new trends of Islam in West Africa.
Mr. Sakon disclosed that while in Kano, they
are expected to meet representatives of Muslim leaders with a view to
familiarizing themselves with the Islamic jurisprudence.
Meanwhile, Governor Ibrahim Shekarau has
received a delegation from his Benue state counterpart, Mr. George Akume who
visited him at his office yesterday.
The delegation which was under the
Consul-General of Benue state in the North, Alhaji Ahmad Ibn Anyamikegh,
told the governor that they were in Kano as part of the Benue state
government�s desire to strengthen relationship with other states in the
North.
The leader of the delegation called on the
Northern governors to take decisive steps and collective measures to fight
intolerance and bigotry which are capable of truncating the legacy of the
founding fathers of the North.
Responding, Governor Shekarau identified youth
unemployment as the root cause of all the crisis in the country, explaining
that his administration has created over 7,000 jobs since its inception to
check the menace of unemployment.
He commended the efforts of Governor Akume on
the bold initiative taken towards building a united North while assuring
other Nigerians residing in Kano of security of lives and properties.
