NCPC highlights crime prevention

Dr Anthony Obot, the Director-General of the National Crime Prevention Campaign (NCPC), has renewed his call on Nigerians to join the present campaign on crime prevention.

Obot, who was in Aba, Abia, at the weekend for the inauguration of the South-East chapter of the NCPC, described crime prevention as everybody's business.

He said: ``Prevention is always better than cure, and the best strategy for fighting crime is to prevent it from being committed.

``Crime prevention is a great task which we have started, and it is working.''

The director-general said if anyone checked Nigerian universities Monday, ``one place that you will not hear of cultism is the University of Abuja, and that is because we have instituted a crime prevention club there''.

Obot said the NCPC was involved in checking various forms of crime, such as drug faking, cultism, cheating and robbery.

According to him, ``we are working with the police and other security agencies to fight crime in the country.''

So far, the support of well-meaning Nigerians and governments had been impressive, he said.

Earlier, the NCPC's Zonal Director, Chief Levy Okere, had appealed to the police authorities and corporate bodies ``to identify fully with the activities of our community policing service''.

Okere described the home as the bedrock of the society and nation.

He said: ``This is why parents need to be strict and uncompromising with respect to discipline at home.

``Have you ever wondered where students who are cultists get the money to buy sophisticated weapons from?''
