Ogunleye stresses role of his ministry

From KABIRU YUSUF, Abuja

THE minister of works, Senator Adeleye Ogunlewe has said that the role of his ministry is to rehabilitate roads in addition to building new ones.

He disclosed this while receiving a delegation from Chevron/Texaco in his office.

During the meeting, "Global Safety Project'', a Chevron-Texaco initiative, the minister however, reiterated the commitment of his ministry to set-up road camps to take care of emergency situations on Nigerian roads or highways.

He explained that the areas the ministry would need assistance are communication facilities, road signs, equipments like vehicle recovery vans, ambulances, towing vans for accident vehicles, road sign to mention but few, he said.

Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Mr. James Ngubo (Caltex South Africa) had explained how Chevron and Texaco are concerned about the frequent spate of motor vehicle crashes and fatalities involving employees, contractors and the public at large.

Mr. Ngubo also pointed out that the project is geared toward making significant strides to eliminate fatalities and injuries among our employees and the public.

He laid more emphasis on education of motorists as well as identifying hot spots where there are frequent accidents.

"A lot will be done about advocacy work where there is the need for overhead paths/bridges for pedestrians to cross a highway,'' he said.

Responding to a question, he explained that the Road Safety Commission would have to do more work especially in the areas of education and the inspection of vehicles according to the law, saying that the National Assembly too should not be left out in these areas.
