...as Sheikh berates Gowon over restoring suspended gov

From FAROUK ADAMU YAKASAI, Gusau

AN Islamic scholar in Gusau, Zamfara state, Sheikh Ahmad Umar Kanoma has joined issues with former head of state, General Yakubu Gowon over his call for reinstatement of democracy in Plateau.

It could be recalled that the former head of state had during a forum to mark his 70-year anniversary called on the federal government to reinstate democratic structures in Plateau state.

However while reacting during a Ramadan Tafsir, the Islamic scholar took a swipe on the former head of state, describing his call as un-gentlemanly of his.

Sheikh Kanoma wandered how a former head of state could be so uncaring about the large number of lives lost in the Yelwa-Shendam genocide.

"What would have expected General Gowon to consider is, has he found out whether those who lost their relations have been adequately compensated or those who fled have returned to their abodes?''

He therefore appealed to the federal government to consider restoring peace in the war-torn Plateau state and ensure brotherly co-existence.

According to the Islamic scholar, the lives lost in Yelwan Shendam "are those of human beings not animals so it is very callous for anyone to think of restoring democratic structures without considering and rectifying issues that the crisis was predicated upon.''

He pointed out that democratic structures or Chief Dariye are no longer the issue at stake in Plateau,'' but peaceful coexistence among both Muslims and Christians on the Plateau, and therefore urged the federal government to disregard pressures mounted on it to restore Dariye.''
