not qiute long ago, the Kano state government,
through the office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) announced
the reconstitution of boards of nearly all government owned institutions,
parastatals and companies in the state when it released the names of some
selected personnalities to serve as chairmen and board members of these
institutions. Only Kano State sports Council (KSSC) and Kano Pillars
Football Club together with some very few others are yet to have their
boards reconstituted.
To me, I see no harm in the delay for the
appointment of the chairmen and members of these two important bodies.
likewise, I dont see it as a no love lost situation for sports from the
government.
I personally look at the scenario as a blessing
to Kano sports since not everybody can be appointed as chairman or members
of a sports organisations. This is because the chairman and board members of
any sports outfit play a complementory but very important role in the
institution they found themselves, which means, for sports to be
administered perfectly in the state, serious and dedicated people with
unshakeable interest in sports need to be assigned to serve in the boards of
sports organisations.
serious and dedicated people are needed to
serve in the boards of these organisations in the sense that, sports is one
thing which brings instant results. And which everway the result goes, these
people will be available to either hold it tight in case of positive results
or devise means to find its solution if the result is negative.
Take for instance, if a sporting event is in
progress and our team(s) leading, these people will be at hand working days
and nights to maintain the lead. And if the reverse is the case, theyll
also do the same to find the cause of the poor results, correct it as
quickly as possible and put things back in order.
These simple reasons and a lot more made it
imperative for the government not to rush the appointment of these boards.
The government needs to thoroughly scrutinised the appointees before it
makes their names public.
Capabilities of those to be shouldered with the
responsiblities of running sports and taking it to greater heights in the
state have to be ascertained. this is onething which to me is delaying the
nominatition of Kano State sports Council (KSSC) board of directors and Kano
Pillars Football Club management board respectively.
Based on the above, I want to advise government
to be very carefull in choosing those to be board members of all sports
organisation in the state. Only people with genuine interest in sports
should be allowed to scale through. Government should do away with people
who lobby for positions especially in sporting fields. It should shun people
who are desperately looking for posts. Sports is no - go area for such
people.
They dont have anything to offer as far as
sports is concerned in the state. Government should go for professionals,
people with track records in sporting field and administration, not people
who are only interested in what they will get and not what they will
contribute.
The calibre of people needed should be those
with proven integrity and leadership qualities in sports. They should be
financially resourcefull, realible and initiative. they should be people
with total commitment to sports development and be knowledgeable in sports
and its administration.
Those to be appointed should be people who are
ready to work collectively and be credit worthy. They should be highly
reputable and not those that will always depend on government for finance.
Another thing to put more emphasis on is check
and balance within the respective boards especially Kano Pillars Football
Club. The clubs new management board should be made to always make its
requests through Kano State Sports Council, its mother parastatal as it used
to be before. They should be made to employ the use of council professionals
not to go outside for something we have in abundance.
