DAILY TRIUMPH-Work on Abuja-Kaduna road only a palliative measure - Unuigbe

Work on Abuja-Kaduna road only a palliative measure - Unuigbe

Mr Charles Unuigbe, managing director, Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, says repairs work currently being carried out on the Abuja-Kaduna expressway is only a temporary measure.

Unuigbe said the measure was to keep motorists moving before full-scale rehabilitation to be carried out by the ministry.

A statement signed by the resident information officer, Mr Timothy Oyedeji, said Unuigbe made the observation while inspecting the road with a team of engineers on Thursday.

He said the move was informed by government's resolve to make the expressway pothole free before the yuletide season.

Unuigbe said he had strong commitment from contractors handling the project that new pot holes and distressed spots would be promptly attended to whenever and wherever they were spotted.

Speaking on "Operation 1000 Roads", billed to be launched early next year, Unuigbe said the concept was not mutually exclusive of the

``Operation500'' but was an addition to the responsibilities of his agency.

``There are two components of the new operation, the first being the increased operation from 26,000 km under the old operation to 32,000 km road network nation-wide,'' he said.

Unuigbe also said the agency would take additional responsibilities for access and internal roads leading to all federal institutions and establishments like barracks, hospitals and courts.

He called on the government to create an enabling environment for private sector participation in the management of the country's economy.

The Primate said that such participation would result in increase efficiency, productivity and profitability in the nation's socio-economic development.

He stressed the need for individuals and organisations to invest in refineries,

``Programmes such as due process, Service delivery and National Economic Empowerment Development Strategy (NEEDS) are laudable programmes capable of transforming the socio-economic map of Nigeria if properly implemented,'' he said.

Ositelu advised youths to avoid negative acts such as cultism and exam malpractice which ``slows down national development and embrace the fear of God.''
