Masari explains review of Police Act

    ABIODUN ADELAJA, Abuja

THE law establishing the Nigeria Police is to be reviewed to make it conform with democratic norms and values as well as give legal backing to community policing.

Speaker House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Masari, who disclosed this while flagging off a one-day interactive session on the Police Act, noted that the 60-year old legislation is out of tune with current realities in the country and requires prompt review.

“Unfortunately and for inexplicable reasons, the Nigeria Police Act has been in use for 61 years without any review to reflect the profound changes in our national life and history.

“And it appears to be really out of touch with reality as with also the norms of the people (both the police and the policed) that it regulates,” the speaker stated.

According to Masari, the disconnection between the police, the law and the community has contributed in heightening the citizens’ feeling of insecurity and fear of police while the police carry on as the master of the people rather than its servant.

In his welcome address, House of Committee Chairman, Hon. Emmanuel Bwacha, stated that the Act contains some fundamental flaws that have inhidited the Nigeria Police from effectively discharging its functions.

The police, he noted, had performed well in international peace-keeping operations but has fared poorly in curbing crime locally due to legal constraints.
