OPC, MONAD insist on national
confab

A groundswell of opinions have
continued to echo in support of the convocation of a Sovereign National
Conference (SNC) as a panacea to the myriad of problems confronting the
country.
Speaking in an interview on
Wednesday, the factional President of the Yoruba ethnic nationalist group,
the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) Chief Gani Adams said unless the
conference is convened, equity and justice would never be achieved in the
country.
Adams who spoke during the
first Heroes Day celebration in remembrance of slain members of the
congress said though many of his group members have been killed because of
the agitation for fair-play in the polity, yet the group would continue to
clamour for the conference until the lopsidedness in the nations
structural set up is corrected.
He lamented that despite the
fact that it is crystal clear that the solution to the country problems
lies with the convocation of the conference; those in the corridors of
power have consistently failed to realize the imperative of such a
convergence of opinions.
 We shall not stop calling
for it until it is done. May God let them realize that the conference will
help in no small measure to help in dousing the tensions in the land, he
said.
Speaking in the same vein, the
Movement of Nationalists and Democrats (MONAD) said that it would only
give total support to the planned nationwide strike of November 16, if
only its focus is sharpened to include the immediate convocation of a
Sovereign National Conference to work out an indigenous ideology and
appropriate body of law for our lovely country stressing that without the
right political philosophy, no policy will succeed and no economic reforms
would work.
In a statement by its founder,
Morris Reeves (a.k.a. Olisa Mmokwe), and dated November 8,2004, the
movement also demanded the immediate insulation of the offices of the
Attorney-General, Inspector-General of Police and the Judiciary from the
executive to allow them to function properly
The group also called for the
immediate abrogation of the 1999 constitution and the jettisoning of the
current presidential system of government which, apart from being
expensive is encouraging military democracy.
