PDP suspends Ahmed, raises panel over attack on governor

By Olufemi Yahaya

Special Correspondent, Lokoja

Tension has heightened in Kogi State, as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended Senator A. Ahmed, a member of its Board of Trustees, over last weeks attack by hoodlums on Governor Ibrahim Idris and his deputy, Chief Phillip Salawu.

Suspended along with him is Mallam Sadiq Abubakar Sadeq, who is the Secretary of the Party in the State. The governor and his deputy narrowly escaped death, when they were attacked by hoodlums suspected to be supporters of some PDP stalwarts during the partys meeting in Okene.

The suspension of Ahmed and Sadiq was announced in Lokoja by the States chairman of the party, Chief John Odawu at the end of an enlarged meeting of the executive committee of the party.

In addition, a seven-man committee headed by a former minister, retired General David Jemibewon has been set up to further review the involvement of the suspended party members in the crisis.Other measures taken by the state executive was the replacement of some of the executive members who have taken up political appointments, thereby putting an end to the controversy on the issue.

The chairman used the occasion to appeal to youths to refrain from being used as political thugs. Chief Odawu however, condemned the Okene incident which he said rather than usher in a decamped former Deputy Governor Chief Patrick Adaba ended abruptly in fracas with notable party stalwarts sustaining injuries.

Meanwhile, efforts to get Senator A.T. Ahmeds response to the turn of events proved abortive but his aids disclosed to Daily Independent that they are not bothered and insisting that events shall unfold themselves.
