Globacom, the second national
carrier in the telecom sector has been lauded for its high quality service
and effective coverage of telecom services in the country.
President Olusegun Obasanjo
who gave the commendation in a congratulatory letter sent on Monday to
Globacom Chairman, Dr. Mike Adenuga (Jnr.) through the Minister of
Communications, Chief Cornelius Adebayo, said he was highly impressed with
Glo Mobiles remarkable performance within the short period of its
operation.
Part of the letter titled
Letter of congratulations for effective nationwide coverage of Messrs
Globacom Nigeria Limited and signed by Chief Adebayo reads: I refer to
the report you sent to us on your companys recent roll-out plans for the
Northern states titled Globacom Northern Outreach Programme and wish to
commend your effort toward effective coverage of the nation with high
quality service within the short time of your operation. I write to inform
you that the attention of Mr. President has been drawn to your wonderful
achievement in the developmental drive within the telecommunication sector
of the country.
In view of this impressive
performance, Mr. President has approved that you should be formally
congratulated for your remarkable performance and to wish you success in
the full implementation of the Glo Mobile Northern Outreach
Programme.
Please, keep us informed of the progress being
recorded in the implementation of this laudable scheme and accept my
highest regards and best of commendation, please.
The presidents commendation
for Globacom follows those of other government officials including Vice
President Atiku Abubakar, Deputy Senate President Ibrahim Mantu and
Communications Minister, Cornelius Adebayo.
Atiku had recently in Lagos
declared that the federal government was proud of Globacom for blazing the
trail in several areas of telecom operation in Nigeria. He expressed
confidence that the network would be the hallmark for promoting the ideals
of democracy and accelerating the countrys social and economic
development.
Mantu and Adebayo had also
expressed similar sentiments at the launch of Globacoms General Packet
Radio Services (GPRS) in Abuja.
Globacom had launched its
service in August last year on the 2.5G technology, making it the only
network with such a platform in Nigeria. The GPRS-enabled technology
allows the network to offer such mobile data and value added services as
Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), Glo Direct and Glo Mobile Internet. It
also pioneered the Per Second Billing System.
Globacom has in just 14 months
of operation reached the 1.9 million subscribers mark and currently covers
164 towns and 17 expressways.
