Plans by some powerful members
of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Abia State to have Chinonyerem
Macebuh (Ukwa East/West) recalled from the House of Representatives have
failed.
The Independent National
Electoral Commission (INEC) said in a statement on Tuesday that the
failure of the move to recall him was because the petition to that effect
could not garner up to 50 per cent support of the registered voters in the
constituency.
The statement by the Director,
Public Affairs, Steve Osemeke, said the petition fell short of the
constitutional provision that more than 50 per cent of the registered
voters in the constituency must sign the petition for it to
succeed.
It said sequel to the petition
to recall Macebuh, INEC conducted a verification exercise between October
14 and 16 in Ukwa East and Ukwa West local government areas.
The verification was to
ascertain that the signatories to the petition were bona fide registered
voters in that constituency, as a prelude to the conduct of a referendum
as provided for in Section 69 of the constitution.
It said the total number of
registered voters in the constituency was 66,068 and those who signed the
recall petition were 35,495. Out of this, only 24,888 names were found in
the register of voters. This amounted to 37.7 per cent, of the total
number of registered voters in the constituency, said the
statement.
INEC said it has received
another petition for the recall of Senator Jubril Aminu (Adamawa Central)
of Adamawa State.
It said the petition to recall
Aminu was submitted to the commissions Chairman, Abel Guobadia, by a
delegation from the state. INEC said the petitioners alleged that Aminu
was not identifying with his people who voted him into office. They also
alleged that he is aligning with people outside the state.
