Abia State Governor Orji Uzor
Kalus kinsmen of the old Bende political bloc have asked him to vie for
the 2007 presidential election.
The bloc comprising eight
local government areas of the state unanimously endorsed him for the
nations top job.
At the one-day Bende Cultural
Day festival in Aba, the old Bende Cultural Union said the bloc has always
produced great men who made impact on the countrys political and economic
scene.
They cited the example of the
first military head of state, late General Aguiyi Ironsi, former Premier
of the defunct Eastern Nigeria, late Dr. Michael Okpara and former
governor of the region, late Dr. Akanu Ibiam, stressing that what Kalu
would be doing by vying for the race to Aso Rock would be to replay what
his forefathers did.
Chairman of the festival,
Chief Ndubuisi Okorie, said, The problem of the Igbo man in Nigerian
politics is selfishness that has retarded the growth of the
people.
Okorie appealed to all the
Igbo to support Kalu so that the dream of having a president of Igbo
extraction would be achieved through him. He advised Igbo politicians to
emulate their counterparts from other zones who have used their offices to
service their people and attract development.
The Chairman, Council of
Traditional Rulers in Abia State, Eze Isaac Ikonne, said the governor has
all it takes to be the president of Nigeria in 2007.
Ikonne said the issue that
brought some skirmishes between the old Bende bloc and the old Aba bloc
was hatched in Abuja and executed in Abia by some Abuja-based politicians
who thought that they could wrest power out of Kalus hands.
He, therefore, urged the two
opposing blocs to unite and work for a common goal.
The Information Commissioner,
Chief Ralph Egbu, said the old Bende was the 10th of such groups that have
asked the governor to contest the 2007 presidential election.
Egbu, who represented Kalu at
the festival, asked the people to unite so as to achieve the Igbo
presidency project.
Said he, We cannot do it
alone. We have to consult other zones and carry them along.
