OAU probes students riot

By Gbenga Faturoti

Special Correspondent, Osogbo

Authorities of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife, have set up a 7-man fact finding panel to probe the immediate and remote causes of last weeks violent protest in the institution.

The management of the institution at the end of an emergency meeting of the university Senate named the Chairman, Committee of Deans, Professor J. Adebayo as the chairman of the panel.

The students had last week embarked on violent protest, which claimed the life of a part 1 architecture student, Rasheed Alaketu, and property worth several millions of naira were vandalised.

Besides, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Rogers Makanjuola and some principal staff of the institution were rough handled and held hostage before anti riot policemen drafted to the scene dispersed the rampaging students to secure their release. The authorities of the institution later closed down the school.

The panel, according to a statement issued by the university Tuesday, is to identify those behind the protest; establish the causes and facts of the incident; advise on necessary steps to prevent future episodes and advise on the improvement of the security of lives and property in the university.

The senate also resolved that the institution would not be reopened until normalcy returns to the university.

When the university reopens, each student must make reparation to cover the cost of damages and loss of university property. They must also each come with a sworn affidavit from their parents or guardians to guarantee their future behaviour, the senate said.
