AD chieftain advocates part time legislators

From Bassey Ita, in Calabar

Against the backdrop of poor legislative practices leveled against the Cross River state legislature by the veteran journalist and former national vice chairman of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), Etubom Bassey Enyo Bassey has advocated for a part time legislative tenure for lawmakers in the country.
Etubom Bassey’s reaction over the antecedent of the lawmakers came on the heels of a call by the House on the state government to de-recognize him as a titled chief in the Obong’s council at the Efic royal palace, Calabar.
The legislature had reacted to an earlier statement allegedly made by Etubom Bassey that the people of Bakassi might be better off belonging to Cameroon since the government of Nigeria has nothing concrete to do in appreciating their presence and belonging to Nigeria.
The lawmakers were recently accused of meddlesomeness on the issues of local government allocations in the state which has crippled local government administration.
According to Etubom, “the declaration by the Cross River state House of Assembly brings the question of full time legislators to the table. It is wrong to waste so much of our national resources maintain able-bodied persons who have nothing to do, people who are so idle that they do not find time to read the Nigeria constitution.
“I dread the day when citizens must clear their views with parliament before expressing them, whereas the idea of parliament itself is that disparate views are to be canvassed in a polity.”
Bassey, who was governorship candidate of AD in the 1999 gubernatorial elections, also maintained that “the lesson of the Great Lakes Region is there for all who care to learn. If political leadership in Nigeria, Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea do not act responsibility, the carnage involving Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda and D.R Congo will be repeated here.”
He therefore warned “this is not the time for fickle political leadership, as decisions reached now may render our part of the world very unsafe (for humans or for business).”
