Ekiti workers begin strike action
By David Atalese

Ahead of next weeks nationwide strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), civil servants in Ekiti State on Thursday
began industrial action following the inability of the state government to meet their demands for better conditions
of service.
The civil servants under the aegis of the state Joint Negotiating Council (JNC) had given a fourteen-day ultimatum
to the state government within which it should meet their demands.
In a swift reaction, the state government set up a committee to meet the council in order to avert the strike but
the meeting was deadlocked on Tuesday.
Among other things the civil servants are demanding for the implementation of the monetisation policy as spelt
out by the federal government.
They are also demanding the payment of their 2003 leave bonuses, car and housing loans, stressing that if the government
could purchase cars for permanent secretaries, nothing should stop government from doing the same for them.
Daily Independent learnt that the meeting between the two parties was dead locked as the state governor, Peter
Ayodele Fayose, refused to shift ground on virtually all the demands of the workers from his original positions.
A statement by JNC chairman, Kayode Ogundele, called on the state civil servants to embark on indefinite strike
pending the time the governor would see reason with them and meet their demands.
But Fayose told reporters that he could not meet their demands after he had paid their outstanding leave bonuses
between 2001 and 2003 and he was ready to pay the remaining 2004 leave bonus in batches but not at once as demanded
by the workers.
He said that he refused to sign an agreement with them because it would amount to deceit.
I cannot sign agreement that I will not be able to implement,he added.
