FG to sell 1004 Flats to occupants

By Dan Alo

Correspondent, Lagos

Legal occupants of the 1004 flats on Victoria Island, Lagos, who have been protesting Federal Governments sale of the property to a private company, can now heave a sigh of relief as they may now be given an opportunity to buy them.

Housing Minister, Mrs Mojisola Osomo, disclosed this in Lagos on Thursday during an inspection of some Federal Government buildings in the state slated for sale.

Part of governments monetisation policy, she explained is that government properties slated for sale should be sold to those allocated the flats, and who are at present residing in the buildings.

Osomo added: We are in consultation with the resident associations of these estates thereby removing the misunderstanding of governments intentions, which have caused agitations among the residents. We have assured them that provided they are legal occupants of the flats, they will be given preference when government finally concludes mode of sale.

According to Osomo, all ministries will have the forms for the sale of the flats and it can be obtained directly from the Federal Secretariat, Ministry of Housing, in Abuja, where the present occupants will be required to fill personal information, which will be considered by a sales panel and subsequently cleared for purchase. Many of the occupants, she explained, have obtained the forms and are being screened for the sale.

She commended the military for taking prompt steps in properly identifying their personnel allocated flats in the 1004 and Bar Beach towers. These, no doubt, have helped the Housing Ministry in having records of the number of flats available for sale in the estate, she said.
