Delta seeks world leaders assistance in Niger Delta
By Tunke-Aye Bisina
Reporter, Asaba
Against the backdrop of the effect of the situation in the Niger Delta on the world oil prices, the Delta State
Government has called the attention of world leaders to join hands to find a lasting solution to the problems of
the area.
The Commissioner for Information, Mr. Magnus Onyibe, speaking with reporters on Wednesday in Asaba, lamented that
whereas the Niger Delta region plays a prominent role in the stabilization of world oil prices, leaders across
the globe have remained unconcerned about the problems of the region.
According to him, there is the urgent need for concerted efforts from governments across the globe to find solutions
to the problems of underdevelopment and poverty in the Niger Delta area, adding that international approach was
required in bringing lasting peace and infrastructural development to the area.
"The problem in the Niger-Delta region is neither a peculiar problem of Delta State nor Nigeria, but that
of the entire world which has direct relationship to the price of oil.
"A good example of the fact that the problem of the Niger Delta is the problem of the world is the recent
threat by protesters in the Niger Delta to frustrate oil exploration in its relationship with the price of oil
and how it shoots up.
"It has become obvious to everybody that they are intertwined, that whatever happens in the Niger-Delta affects
the price of oil in the world, which implies that every person who drives a car that runs on petrol should pick
interest in the happenings in the Niger-Delta region.
Onyibe reiterated that the Niger Delta region, despite its place in global oil politics, has remained devastated,
consequently resulting in youth unrest and criminal activities, stressing that the situation required urgent attention
from all stakeholders across the world.
The panacea to peace in the region, he noted, was for the area to be developed infrastructurally and provided with
enough industries that could provide gainful employment for the youth, maintaining that the state government on
its part was committed to meeting the developmental needs of the people of the state and by extension the region.
