Wabara Decries Renewed Crisis in Anambra
Abana wants Ngige suspended From Kola Ologbondiyan in Abuja, 11.11.2004
Senate President Adolphus Wabara yesterday, decried renewed crisis in Anambra State, blaming this on the failure of the political actors in the state to abide by the instructions and decisions of the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). But Senator Ikechukwu Abana (PDP, Anambra Central) also yesterday reviewed the breakdown of law in Anambra State and called on the PDP to suspend the state governor, Chris Ngige, from the party. Wabara, in condemning the arson and looting that rocked Awka, called on security agencies, "particularly the police to rise up to the challenge of protecting lives and property in the state." Noting that the reported arson and looting were "fuelled by political undercurrents," the Senate President admonished "all the political actors in Anambra to immediately call their supporters to order." He called on security agencies to deal decisively with persons or groups that continue to breach the peace in the state, adding that "in the face of the current crisis, he (Wabara) has confidence in the ability of the national leadership of the PDP to enforce discipline among chieftains and members of the party in Anambra and consequently stem the ugly tide in the state." Wabara's statement, which was signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Henry Ugbolue, however, recalled that "the Owerri Peace Accord which he and other political leaders from the South-east brokered last year offered a realistic roadmap to peace in Anambra but the political actors breached the terms of the accord, hence the renewed crisis." The Senate President maintained that "the enforcement of party discipline and genuine dialogue among all political actors in Anambra State remains the only route to peace." Abana, who spoke with journalists on phone at the National Assembly, Abuja, accused the governor of being the mastermind of the arson perpetrated in the state. According to him, "the PDP should suspend Ngige for undermining the party. When the party published the list of the approved local government election's candidates, the governor," Abana recalled, "described it as a 419 list and has since then embarked on a war against the list as well as the candidates. "You would also recall that two weeks ago, the PDP chairmanship candidates at a joint press conference alleged that they were refused forms and screening by the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC). "When the chairmanship candidates now insisted on their legitimate slots, thugs loyal to the governor began to disrupt the whole system," he further alleged, adding that, "this latest crisis has exposed the governor and his antics. "He (Ngige) doesn't want the local government election to hold in the state, so when the candidates had concluded arrangements to start their campaign, he moved his thugs against them," alleging that the governor's thugs were also responsible for the torching of the SIEC in Awka. He, however, called on the people of Anambra State not to be dettered by the antics of their governor but to insist that the local election be held "because, if Ngige allowed the election, Nigerians would then see that the governor is not on the ground as all his candidates would fail at the election."
