Rivers Endorses MOSOPs Struggle
From Okon Bassey in Port Harcourt, 11.11.2004
Rivers State government has adopted the programme and principle of the struggle of Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), saying the fight was beyond the Ogoni people and even the Niger Delta region. The state Governor, Dr. Peter Odili, who donated N20 million at the 9th Anniversary of the Ogoni heroes day and its project in Port Harcourt in pursuance of the course, noted that the struggle encompasses the poor and the down-trodden in society. Odili, who was represented by the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, said he was fully in support of the agitation for true federalism and resource control whereby communities like Ogoni blessed with certain natural endowment should control and enjoy what belongs to them. The governor added that government endorsed the principle of the Ogoni course in totality, explaining that out of the N20 million donation, N5 million is to take care of the expenses incurred by MOSOP in organising the programme while the balance of N15 million is for the building of a library in memory of Ken Saro-Wiwa According to him, the library would serve as a mark of remembrance of the late Ogoni hero, Ken Saro-Wiwa, murdered by a brutal government and remained the symbol of the struggle. Also speaking, Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, commended the Ogoni people for being in the forefront for the minority struggle through non-violent approach. He condemned the poverty level in the Niger Delta region, which he said, is compounded by oil companies operating in the region and accused them for alienating the people. The deputy governor, who was the chairman of the occasion, called for the adoption of genuine methods to solve the problem of poverty in the region observing that all agencies established to develop the region have failed. He said any development in the region should be measured on the spending power of the people, urging MOSOP to send a memorandum on their grievances and problems to the Presidential committee set up by Federal Government on the problems of the region.
