British Council Holds Confab for New African Leaders
From Iyefu Adoba in Abuja, 11.11.2004
Delegates from 19 Sub-Saharan African countries including Nigeria will between November 22-25 attend a conference organised by the British Council in Abuja entitled "Strengthening African Democracy" to address African issues and share experiences. During the conference a diverse range of Africa's young emerging African leaders in the fields of business, politics, the media, academia and civil society will come together to address African issues said Kayode Sanni, an Education Specialist at a press briefing yesterday at the British Council, Abuja. Issues to be discussed at the networking event include: Africa, the G8 and the Commission for Africa; the role of the media; the rule of law and institution building; peace security and reconciliation; the role of business; and organized crime, corruption and transparency. According to British Council Deputy Director, Peter Brown, at the end of the three-day conference, the participants would have gained a deeper insight and new perspectives on these issues. Brown said a high profile team of international mainly African presenters would address the delegates. He added that the programme is based on the assumption that building mutually beneficial relationships at all levels of society between Africa and developing innovative ways of managing dialogue will make a positive impact for Africa. Interested members of the public can participate by logging onto a blogging site to post commentaries, while the participants relying on information technology for networking will use facilities provided by the British Council to develop their skills. John Richards, the council's Nigerian Director said the programme would continue over the next three years, while at least 1,500 people are expected to benefit for the experience.
