Agbeyegbe: Group Demands Resignation of Police Boss
By Adeleke Emmanuel, 11.11.2004
Nigerian Aviation Safety Initiative (NASI), has demanded immediate resignation of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr Israel Ajao, over what it considers the shoddy handling of the October 12 assassination of it's Founder/Executive Director, Captain Jerry Agbeyegbe. The Group told newsmen at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Lagos, yesterday that it was registering its protest against the "circus-style handling of the assassination" of Agbeyegbeby the police. Chairman of the NASI Governing Council, Captain Dung Pam, and the Deputy Executive Director, Engineer Efanga Offiong who addressed newsmen said the group had restrained itself from making statements that may appear pre-judicial to investigation, adding however that "after waiting for over three weeks, we believe that indeed, the preliminary farce about a lone accident as the cause of death, the smear campaign using a lady of highly questionable character, is a rude and utter insult to the collective intelligence of the generality of the Nigerian public. The group noted that the unconvincing denial of a newspaper cover story "has provided ample evidence of the modus operandi being deployed to utterly frustrate the truth." "We are afraid to say that the Nigerian public is fast losing confidence in the ability of the current federal police structure to secure our lives and property, or the will to honestly take the appropriate action when a breach occurs," the group said. NASI affirmed that after about 29 days of the death of its founder, the 29 posers it had raised have remained unresolved. "This has confirmed our initial fears that Agbeyegbe's killing reeks strongly of police complicity. They now seems to be the blueprint that applies to the plethora of recent inconclusive assassination investigations, Chief Bola Ige, Marshall Harry, Aminosoari Dikibo etc," the group alleged, while demanding an unreserved apology from the police to the people of Nigeria, for deliberately misleading the public over the cause of death.
