Should the NLC embark on another strike to protest the fuel price hike?
Leave Tinubu Alone, AD Tells Bode George
By Ndubuisi Ugah, 11.11.2004
Alliance for Democracy (AD) has called on President Olusegun Obasanjo-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration to desist from attempts geared towards distracting Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Lagos State in providing the people with good governance, which invariably would be for the overall interest of the state and nation in general. The party, in a statement yesterday, said it hinged its call following recent statements credited to the PDP National Vice Chairman (South-west), Chief Olabode George to the effect that he (Tinubu) was bankrolling the activities of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in the November 16 planned strike over the increase in prices of petroleum products. The statement signed by Prince Dayo Adeyeye, national publicity secretary of the party, noted that its fears stemmed from the fact that since Tinubu assumed office, the trio of George and Minister of Works, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe have increasing attacked the activities of the state government, an indication it (AD) felt was borne out of sentiments. "The recent statement of Bode George that Governor Bola Tinubu of Lagos State is the one sponsoring the labour strike confirms what we have always feared: that Bode George's anti-Tinubu pursuit has become an obsession bordering on insanity", the statement remarked. The party wondered why Tinubu would be accused of sponsoring such an action when it was obvious that the governor policies and programmes was designed to improve the living standard of the people, while stating that "they should do well therefore to allow him to concentrate on fulfilling his promises to the people". "Or how else can one explain the spurious, illogical and unreasonable charge. What has Tinubu got to gain from a prolonged labour crisis? If and when the strike takes place, will the workers and people of Lagos state be immuned from it? If the answer is no, why then would the governor of Lagos State sponsor such a strike?", AD querried. AD pointed out that it would have been more ideal for George to have appraised the issue on ground logically before arriving at a verbosed conclusion moreso when "these are the reasonable questions that one would have expected a thoughtful and self respecting, mature mind to ponder upon before rushing to make the kind of wild and spurious allegations that George made". The party noted with dismay the activities of Bode George and Ogunlewe on the Lagos State government and expressed misgivings at such, stating that their activities is even backed by the Presidency. "The fact that President Obasanjo has never called both George and Ogunlewe to order, but has in fact been too eager to endorse their positions leaves one with no other conclusion than that the President is a senior partner in this trinity of conspiracy against the Lagos State governor", the statement added. Noting that George and Ogunlewe are so obsessed in running down the Tinubu administration, the party "recalled that it was this same Bode George who rushed to telephone President Obasanjo last April that Tinubu was in Ekiti State to disrupt the resheduled local government elections in certain parts of the state". According to the party, "this led Obasanjo who never bordered to crosscheck with Tinubu to rush soldiers from Akure to bombard the governor, two former governors and their entourage", stating that "Obasanjo and Bode George continued to foolishly defend their illegal and barbaric actions even when all the evidence was to the contrary". According to the party,"the fact that President Obasanjo has never called both George and Ogunlewe to order, but has in fact been too eager to endorse their postions leaves one with no other conclusion than that the President is a senior partner in this trinity of conspiracy against the Lagos State governor". "Our message to the unholy triumphrate is that they should come to terms with the fact that the good people of Lagos State elected Tinubu as governor. He enjoys a very popular mandate. God willing he will be governor till 2007", the party stressed. On Ogunlewe, the party observed that the minister had never hidden the fact that he sees his ministerial portfolio as an opportunity to destroy and cause confusion in Lagos State. "He has turned his Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) into a terrorist organisation in Lagos State. Only last week, FERMA unleashed blood-chilling terror on the peace loving people of Lagos Island, causing massive destruction of property all in a vain attempt to bring down the Tinubu administration. The question is: Is Ogunlewe Minister of Lagos Affairs?", the statement said. The party, however, frowned at the situation where Ogunlewe is said to be spending 80 percent of his time in Lagos, not doing good, but causing pain and irritation to the government and people of Lagos State. "Whatever ambitions Ogunlewe may have; must he destroy the state before he realizes it? Why must the ordinary people of Lagos state be made to suffer and bear such pain because of a personal ambition", the party stated.
