Kwara Assembly Crisis Deepens

The crisis of confidence on the aborted impeachment plot on the Speaker of the Kwara State House Assembly, Hon Issa Bio Ibrahim and his deputy, Hajia Hamdalat Banke Badmas deepened on Wednesday with the setting up of a three-man committee to probe the leakage of last week botched impeachment plot to the press. The setting up of the committee is on the heels of mutual suspicion and seemingly cold relationship that has permeated the assembly since the impeachment plot was leaked to the public last week by the media. The assembly, through its chairman, House Committee on Information, Sports,Youth and Culture, Hon. Kola Bukoye had however come out to deny the plot, claiming that the lawmakers only raised a committee to review its 19 months of legislative bussiness. The assembly spokesman told newsmen at a press conference on Wednesday that the six-man committee set up by the house had no bussiness nor mandate of probing the Speaker and his deputy let alone contemplate impeaching them. Sources at the assembly hinted that moment after the press conference, the lawmakers, on the floor of the house expressed worry on the leakage of the impeachment plot and resolved to investigate the source of the leakage among the members. The three-man committee headed by the Deputy Speaker, Hajia Hamdalat Badmus with the Clerk of the House, Prince Mahe Abdulkadir was given specific mandate to look into the leakage and recommend appropriate punishment to any erring members.Other members of the committee included, Hon Ishola Balogun Fulani and Hon Ayo Idowu. Meanwhile, the house had rejected attempt by the speaker, Alhaji Isa Bio Ibrahim to raise some committees to address the nagging issues that incited his colleagues against him and his deputy. Ibrahim, according to a source at an inner meeting with the lawmakers intimated his colleagues of the need to set up of some committees including cash and disbursement committee, contract award committee and an appointment sub committee to as a way of proving his transparent leadership. But lawmakers, who felt uncomfortable with the position of the speaker on the setting up of the committees, persuaded him to drop the idea, pointing out that all issues bordering on the impeachment plot should be put behind. The persuasion, according to the source, did not go down with some of the lawmakers who reportedly later accosted the deputy speaker of bungling their agenda. Efforts are now being made by some concerned members of the assembly to mend the crack caused by the botched impeachment plot.
