Should the NLC embark on another strike to protest the fuel price hike?
Why We're Against Strike, By Concerned Lagosians
By Olawale Olaleye, 11.11.2004
Concerned Citizens of Lagos State, an association of students, market women, artisans and other stakeholders, yesterday at a rally in Lagos said the reason they were against the proposed NLC strike was that the labour leader, Adams Oshiomhole was part of the arrangement that brought about incessant increase in fuel prices. Speaking at the rally which held at Labour House, Yaba, Lagos, National President of Nigerian Union of Railwaymen, Comrade Hamilton Okere explained that they had told Oshiomhole not to support deregulation because government was yet to put in place measures that would cushion the aftermath effect. Okere said he had the situation in the country and therefore advised Oshiomhole to be wary of the cost implication of throwing his weight behind the deregulation exercise. But because of vested interests, Okere said Oshiomhole chose to support the exercise, but when it was no longer working out, however chose to disembark through the instrumentality of strike which he said would do no one any good. "Adams should own up. He has failed. What we have to do now is to go back to government, dialogue and work out a lasting solution to the crisis of energy not insisting on strike without having exploited all necessary avenues." "Can anyone buy fuel for N10 and sell for less? It is not possible, we have to be realistic. Deregulation is in operation and we must live with that reality. The issue is putting the foundation right because it is faulty," he said. Okere posited that the reason they have mobilised was to prove a point that there was no need for the strike, adding that no matter how long it takes, dialogue remains the only solution, especially such issue as oil. He therefore called on labour leader to see reason because the effect of strike is often too dire on the mass of the Nigerian population, adding that the stakeholders should go back to a round table in the interest of peace.
