Should the NLC embark on another strike to protest the fuel price hike?
Govt Reacts to Labour Threat
11.11.2004
Ekiti State government has reacted to threat by state Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), to down tools over non-payment of leave bonus and entitlements to workers. The NLC has in a notice signed by the State Chairman, Comrade Suyi Aribisala, gave 15 November as the commencement of the strike unless the leave bonus for the 2004 is paid immediately. Speaking with reporters in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Idowu Adelusi, said the state government ought to have been commended by the workers over payment of arrears of salaries and allowances owed them by the last administration. He said Fayose's administration met unpaid arrears of leave bonus of year 2001, 2002 and that it has paid everything including that of year 2003. He wondered why the NLC was spoiling for a showdown over the 2004 leave bonus knowing that Fayoses administration has done a lot to make workers more comfortable within 17 months of its existence. Adelusi said despite the lean purse of the state, workers are paid on 20th of every month, adding that when the administration came on board, it met two months salary arrears unpaid, were paid before end of last year. He said the administration inherited backlog of unpaid gratuity and pensioners allowances, which has been paid pensioners paid their monthly allowances regularly. He, therefore, called on labour to be grateful and support the administration, instead of becoming confrontational over non-payment of leave bonus of a year yet to expire. He said government has accepted to pay a balance of N250 million leave bonus in five installments. However, we would not want labour to stampede government into making promises that can not be fulfilled, he said.
