Immunization: Bayelsa Wants FG Support

Bayelsa State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ayibapreye Baralatei has called for more support from the Federal Government and other health related organizations in the country to help the state to effectively carry out its health policy at the grassroots. The commissioner who made the call when officials of World Health Organization (WHO) and National Programme on Immunization NPI Abuja paid him courtesy call in his office in Yenagoa, said that the state government has been relentlessly committing enormous human and material resources in the provision of health care services at all levels. He however, expressed concern on the need for more support for the primary health care level in the state owing to the state difficult geographical terrain. According to him, primary health care was the pivot of the state health care practice which main target is the vulnerable group. He pointed out that the routine immunization, HIV/AIDS treatment programmes and other health activities are directed at tackling the health problems of the people at the grassroots. He used the forum to express disappointment a the exclusion of Bayelsa State in the World Bank assisted free HIV/AIDS programme in the country despite what he described as �the huge commitment� of the state in the treatment and campaign against HIV/AIDS pandemic and called on the Federal Ministry of Health to consider Bayelsa State in the scheme of things. Responding on behalf of the Director General of NPI Abuja, Dr. I. E. Ukpong expressed gratitude to the State Government for its commitment in the improvement of health care services and pledged to assist the state within available resources. Dr. Ukpong said that the delegation was in Bayelsa State to ensure the training of officials for the 5th round of National Immunization Days programme coming-up from the 20th-23rd November, 2004 and appealed for the support of the state and local government areas to make the exercise a huge success. Meanwhile, school health services to boost effective upbringing of children educationally both at the primary and post primary levels are to be provided in the state by State Ministry of Health. Bayelsa State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ayibapreye Baralatei who briefed newsmen shortly after the launching of a N8 million educational endowment fund and he commissioning of a completed self help principal quarters project by the state Deputy Governor, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan at Ologoghe Community in Ogbia Local Government Area.
