Anambra Govt Urged to Invest in Industrial Project
By Yemi Akinsuyi, 11.11.2004
The Ukpor Community in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State has called on Governor Chris Ngige not to deny it of government industries projects and other political patronage. The community made the demand just as it stole the show at the Anambra Day, held at Tafawa Balewa complex in Lagos at the weekend. The Ukpor Improvement Union, led by its chairman, Chief Hycinth Maduagwu and the secretary, Barrister Ikem Okwekwe had a field day with the largest number of participants at the 10th Anambra Day, and featuring a dance group called Odenjiji. Also speaking on government projects, Mr. Okey Felix, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Union, called on Governor Ngige for his governments presence in Ukpor being the headquarters of Nnewi South Local Government about the largest town in Anambra State. He asserted that presently, the community has nothing to show in terms of development as there was no government projects, good roads, water and other essential amenities in the town neither was any of its indigenes given any government appointment.
He said the Anambra Day was unique and significant because it is the day for all Anambra State indigenes resident in Lagos to come together. Mr. Felix recalled that the Ukpor indigenes had not been partaking in the Anambra Day in the past, because of leadership crisis, which had wrecked the towns improvement union and which had been amicably resolved. The PRO used the occasion to appeal to his people to give the union executives an unflinching support and cooperation in order to serve them better. He also commended the central leaders of the Ukpor Improvement Union for sinking their differences and resolved to come together for the progress and betterment of Ukpor community.
