George's Political Upstart, Says Tinubu
By Akpan Unyime, 11.11.2004
Governor Bola Tinubu of Lagos State has dismissed allegations levelled against him by the National Vice Chairman South-west of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, that he is supporting the forthcoming labour strike saying George is a "political upstart". He accused George of misadvising President Olusegun Obasanjo on policies that can cushion the sufferings of the people, saying that the presidency has often been misinformed on the socio-economic conditions of the people. Tinubu asked George to account for his tenureship as chairman of the Nigeria Ports Authority during Obasanjos first term. He said the Alliance for Democracy (AD) has repositioned itself to contest for electoral positions when the general elections get underway in 2007. According to the Lagos State Governor, "because of our democratic values and commitment to the stability of Nigeria, we have tolerated political upstarts such as George." Accusing the PDP of rigging the election in the former AD controlled states of Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Osun, and Ekiti, Tinubu said the 2007 elections would be one in which the people would defend their rights to choose a leader. He promised that AD is ready to do battle, assuring that the coming elections "may be hotter than the battle for Baghdad, more ferocious than the battle for Fallujah."
