Kwara Assembly Affirms Confidence in Speaker, Deputy
From Tunde Sanni in Ilorin, 11.11.2004
Apparently smarting from last weeks botched impeachment plot against its Speaker, Alhaji Issa Bio Ibrahim and his deputy, Hajia Hamdalat Bank Badmas, the Kwara State House of Assembly has re-affirmed its unflinching support for the two principal officers. The House was divided last week as the duo of Issa and Badmas were investigated with the view to removing them, but had to bow to last minute plea from the six-man committee that investigated them who pleaded for a rethink on ground that it would send a wrong signal to the outside community on the political situation in the state. At a press conference during the week, the chairman of the House Committee on Information, Sports, Youths and Culture, Hon Kola Bukoye played down the impeachment plot but confirmed that the six- man committee to review the achievements of the assembly within the scope of their legislature had been raised. "The truth of the matter is that in order to review our achievements in the last 19months and to chart a new way forward, a six-man committee of experienced legislators was set up by the whole house," he said. According to him, "the term of reference was not to impeach or indict the Speaker and his deputy on charges of reckless spending, maladministration nor of truancy, misdemeanor on the person of his deputy". The lawmaker affirmed that the composition of the committee members was borne out of experience adding that the chairman of the committee, Hon Ayansola Muhammad was picked as a result of his experience as a member of the immediate past legislature in the state. Bukoye hinted that the need for a review of the achievements of the legislative House arose due to growing acccusations of non-performance levelled against them by their constituencies, a development which he noted had earned some of them bad names in their localities. He averred that the review would now make them see things from a better perspective and sit up to their legislative business so as to win back the confidence of their people. The lawmaker solicited for the support and cooperation of the media in their bid to win more respect and stand out as a legslative chamber with a mission and vision. "We are trying to build a state that has suffered marginalisation since 1967 when it was created, we are just developing and hope you will go along with us". He clarified that the meeting where the decision for the setting up of committee was taken was held after some of his colleagues returned form the United States of America (USA),"and you will grant us the indulgence that we have a right to review our activities which informed the need for the six-man committee".
