Nov. 16 : PENGASSAN to stop oil export
FRANCIS AWOWOLE-BROWNE
FEARS that Nigerias crude oil export may be adversely affected from November 16 (next Tuesday) were confirmed
yesterday as senior oil workers resolved to join the planned nationwide strike over higher fuel prices beginning
that day.
Already, junior oil workers under the aegis of National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) have
since declared support for the strike.
Rising from a meeting of its highest decision making organ, the Central Working Committee (CWC), in Lagos, PENGASSAN
directed its members, including those directly involved in crude oil exploration for export, to proceed on indefinite
strike from November 16, 2004.
As mobilization for the industrial action gathers momentum, Trade Union Congress (TUC), the umbrella body for senior
staff unions, also directed its 26 affiliates to join the strike.
TUC explained that the impending strike is not for a change in government but for a divergence in the style of
administration by the Obasanjo regime.
President of PENGASSAN, Mr. Louis Ogbeifun and the secretary, Mr. Mojibayo Fadakinle, warned in a communique issued
at the end of the CWC meeting, that "branches that fail to comply with this directive will be sanctioned accordingly."
TUC called on its affiliates to ensure total compliance with the action against the refusal of government to reverse
the hike in pump prices of petroleum products to the pre-September 23 price regime.
Secretary General of TUC, Mr. John Kolawole, said in a statement in Lagos yesterday, that at no time did Labour
agitate for a change of the democratically elected government.
"The purpose of TUCs participation in the strike and other actions was primarily to persuade government to
listen to the yearnings of the people and reverse the fuel price hike."
Demand for good governance cannot be equated to a subtle or overt concert for unconstitutional change of government.
TUC therefore dissociates itself from any call, agenda or moves, including prayers to use the platform of the coming
strike to force removal of government," it stated.
