Explosion in PH refinery CHINEDU WOSU, Port Harcourt AN explosion rocked the Eleme Petrochemical and the Refining Company Limited, Port Harcourt, leaving six persons lying critically injured in hospital. The blast was said to have been followed by a fire. Daily Champion gathered that the incident occurred last Tuesday, about 11.00 pm, when some hoodlums in an attempt to scoop petroleum products, ignited a hydrotritic naplita safety tank (a reservoir for kerosine) which subsequently exploded. When Daily Champion visited the scene of the incident at 3.20pm yesterday, group of workers were seen discussing the event. Investigations revealed that no life was lost, but property valued at billions of naira were destroyed. An eyewitnesse told Daily Champion that the six injured workers on duty were badly burnt by the fire and are currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Abuja. A reliable source said normal production has since started at the unit where the incident occurred and assured that such could not affect normal production. No expatriate was reported affected by the incident. Normal loading of fuel was going on when Daily Champion visited the loading point of the refinery. An attempt to speak with the Head, Pubic Relations Unit of the company, Mr. Isaac Onuoha, proved abortive as he declined comments but rather referred our reporter to the firm�s Lagos office.
