...Factional PDP slams gov, canvasses emergency rule

MALACHY UZENDU, Abuja and FELIX UKA, Awka

THE Chris Uba faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State has dismissed allegations that its members were behind the orgy of violence and arson that was visited on the state and government property yesterday.

They said they cannot be associated with people moving around destroying state-owned property.

The group claimed that what happened was sufficient evidence that the state government has become unpopular and has lost the confidence of the people and so convassed the imposition of a state of emergency

Supporters of Uba, the Anambra political godfather, Chief Dan Ulasi and three members of the House of Representatives, Hons. Jerry Ugokwe (Idemili North/South), Harry Oranusi (Nnewi) and Ralph Okeke (Anambra East/West) and Mr. Iluono Afam, factional publicity secretary, PDP in Anambra State, spoke for the political titan at two different fora.

Chief Ulasi, accompanied by the three members of the House of Representatives accused Gov. Ngige of unleashing the mayhem on the state as a means of diverting attention from an alleged government plot to scuttle the states December 18 local government election.

They called on President Olusegun Obasanjo to "correctly interpret the worsening security situation in the state, if it so warrants to be given the same treatment as Plateau State" (where a state of emergency was declared).

They also claimed that they have received reports of several casualties from yesterdays violence.

Afam, who spoke to Daily Champion in the heat of the crisis in Awka said they are not in anyway linked with the matter.

Afam explained that the police were even disturbing the faction over their rally at Anoma junction, Awka, and also could not be said to have sided with the (faction).

"I dont know of any siege. We cant be part of the destruction of our state. No... we have passed that level," Afam stressed.
