Defence Ministry workers down tools CHARLES ABAH ACADEMIC activities have since been paralysed in all military schools following a work-to-rule action embarked upon by workers of the Defence Ministry over alleged non-payment of their monetisation arrears. Also affected in the action, which began November 1, are the staff of the Lagos Liaison Office and outstations nationwide in addition to workers of the military hospitals. The protesting workers have alleged in a statement made available to Daily Champion Tuesday that they had not received their October, November and December 2003 as well as their May, June, August, September, October 2004 monetisation arrears. The statement signed by Co-ordinator-General, Joint Action Committee (JAC), Ministry of Defence Trade Union, Lagos Liaison Office and outstations, Comrade Uche Aguzie, said the action became necessary to highlight "the insensitive disposition of the authorities". The union leader remarked that several futile petitions had been forwarded to the Defence minister to mediate in the matter. Meanwhile, in one of the correspondence between the workers and the ministry and made available to Daily Champion, the acting permanent-secretary B.G Aji, on behalf of the Defence minister, admitted that the said arrears were owed but pleaded with the workers to exercise patience. Aji, who attributed the delay in payment to paucity of fund in the implementation of 2004 appropriation, disclosed, however, that the ministry was no exception.
