Obasanjo lauds Globacom
PRESIDENT Olusegun Obasanjo has congratulated one of the country's GSM operators, Glo Mobile, on the quality of its service.
In a November 8, 2004, letter to the company's Chairman, Dr. Mike Adenuga (Jnr.) the Minister of Communications, Chief Cornelius Adebayo, said the president was impressed with Glo Mobile's performance within the short period of its operation.
The commendation, entitled: "Letter of Congratulation for Effective Nationwide Coverage of Messers Globacom Nigeria Limited," reads:
"I refer to the report you sent to us on your company's recent roll-out plans for the Northern states titled "Globacom Northern Outreach Programme" and wish to commend your effort toward effective coverage of the nation with high quality service within the short time of our operation. I write to inform you that the attention of Mr. President has been drawn to your wonderful achievement in the developmental drive within the telecommunication sector of the country."
Adebayo continued: "In view of this impressive performance, Mr. President has approved that you should be formally congratulated for your remarkable performance and to wish you success in the full implementation of the "Glo Mobile Northern Outreach Programme".
He urged the company to keep the ministry informed of the progress being recorded in the implementation of its "laudable scheme" in the North.
The commendation follows those of other government officials including Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Deputy Senate President Ibrahim Mantu and Communications Minister, Cornelius Adebayo.
Atiku had recently in Lagos declared that the Federal Government was proud of Globacom for blazing the trail in several areas of telecom operation in Nigeria. He expressed confidence that the network would be the hallmark for promoting the ideals of democracy and accelerating the country's social and economic development.
Mantu and Adebayo had also expressed similar sentiments at the launch of Globacom's General Packet Radio Services (GPRS) in Abuja. They described the network as a trail blazer and added that its technological innovations would galvanise economic activities and facilitate improvement in the telecom industry.
Globacom launched its service in August last year on the 2.5G technology, making it the only network with such a platform in Nigeria. This GPRS-enabled technology allows the network to offer such mobile data and value added services as Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), Glo Direct and Glo Mobile Internet. It also pioneered the Per Second Billing System.
The company has in 14 months of operation reached the 1.9 million subscriber mark and currently covers 164 towns and 17 expressways.
