Alayande tasks leaders on service
From Charles Coffie Gyamfi, Abeokuta

OFFICE holders in the country have been urged to give the best service to the people.

The leader of the Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE), Chief Emmanuel Alayande made the call on Wednesday in Abeokuta when he accompanied the President of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Mr. Olaitan Fatunbi and other union executive members to pay a courtesy visit to Governor Gbenga Daniel.

Alayande, who is a retired teacher, said the purpose of the visit was to discuss issues relating to teachers' welfare in the state.

He stated that his deep interest in the teaching profession remained unshaken.

He commended Daniel for the outstanding achievements within his short time in office.

Alayande mentioned provision of infrastructure, employment, good roads and improved agriculture as some of the areas the Daniel administration has excelled.

He was particularly trilled about the on going dualisation of the Abeokuta - Sagamu road being handled by the government's-owned agency, Ogun State Road Maintenance Agency (OGROMA)
In his response, Governor Daniel commended the commitment of the Yoruba leader to the upliftment of the teaching profession, assuring that his administration would continue to accord teachers' welfare a priority.

In another development, the state government on Wednesday donated relief materials to the victims of the February 15 rainstorm disaster at Lufuape in Obafemi Owode Local Council.

The materials worth N1.4 million, according to the state government, is meant to cushion the effect of destruction of property worth thousands of naira.

The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Niran malaolu, who made the donation on behalf of the government, assured that the government would take measures to prevent future disasters.

The Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Anthony Ojesina, urged the people to see the donated items as practical demonstration of the government's determination to respond promptly to the people's distress call.

The council chairman, Mr. Babatunde Adesina thanked the government for the gesture.
