Labour urged to embrace dialogue

IGBO United Commercial Association of Nigeria (IUCAN) has called on the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) to shelve
its proposed strike and embrace continuous dialogue with government.
The umbrella body of Igbo traders also threw its weight behind the Igbo presidency project, stressing that "Ndigbo
are ready and determined to succeed this time around".
President of the association, Chief Amobi Odimuko, who stated this in an interview with Daily Champion at the weekend
in Lagos, said that the increase in prices of petroleum products has caused so much hardship to the citizenry.
According to him, any strike now slow down the progress of the country.
"We urged all the parties involved to continue to dialogue in the interest of peace and unity of the country.
We urge them to explore other options before embarking on any strike.
"In the same vein, we want to appeal to the Ibrahim Mantu Committee on Palliative Measures to demonstrate
a high sense of ethics and sincerity in carrying out its duty of fashioning means of cushioning the harsh economic
condition occasioned e by the recent hike in fuel prices", the group stated.
On the Igbo presidency project, Chief Odimuko said Ndigbo were prepared more than ever before to clinch the presidency
in 2007, but appealed to other sections of the country to support and encourage Igbo to win the presidential election
in 2007.
"We are ready and determined to work hard to achieve the goal. We are grateful to God, that the apex Igbo
body, Ohanaeze, has been strengthened under the leadership of Prof. Joe Irukwu.
We have no doubt, therefore that Ohanaeze, working in concept with other compatriots and groups, will actualise
the Igbo presidency project," the traders further said.
On the proposed Pan Igbo Traders International Conference scheduled to hold in Abuja, soon, Chief Odimuko said
that it is aimed at sensitizing the traders and also to assist government in achieving enduring peace and harmony
in the country, adding that it would be attended by delegates from all the states of the federation including Abuja
and Igbo traders in diaspora.
