Kwara tertiary institutions workers ready for strike
By Dele Mosses,
Special Correspondent, Ilorin
The Committee of the Union of Tertiary Institutions (CUTI) in Kwara State has supported the decision of the Nigeria
Labour Congress (NLC) to resume its suspended strike on November 16 to protest hike in fuel prices.
Speaking in an interview with newsmen in Ilorin on the matter, chairman of CUTI, Mr. Ola Adefila said the union
which is part and parcel of the NLC strongly supports the Congress on its decision to tackle the government on
any of its unpopular policies.
"CUTI is partly part of the NLC and as a corporate entity there is nothing we can do than to actually identify
with the struggle. It is a struggle for all of us and for CUTI, we are actually part of the strike," he added.
The activist, who decried the huge amount spent on the Turn Around Maintenance (TAM) of the nations refineries,
said government ought to have allowed private refineries to take off before the commencement of the deregulation
of the oil industry. "You dont deregulate importation. You deregulate processing of oil that you produce
by yourself," he added.
Expressing pessimism over the palliative committee on cushioning the effect of the hike in prices of petroleum
products set up by the government , Adefila described the move as " deceptive and an insult on the intelligence
of Nigerians."
"What is palliative in giving loans to people to buy commercial vehicles when we are talking about expensive
means of production. What is palliative in that?", he asked.
